Rae had only known El for a short time. A short time in which Rae learnt exactly what irritated El. Maybe it was a certain comment...... Rae thought of herself as a master of manipulation. After trying to calm down, Rae gave El some advice on her facial expression.
"You are horrid. And the sour face does work for me!" Rae chuckled.
"Horrid? Me? Never! Irritating....... lets just say I'm skilled in that department." Rae looked cheekily at El. Maybe Rae was being a bit mean...... but she just couldn't help it!
"Besides, he was actually a bit mean. Really. He laughed at me. You do not laugh at me. The first part was fun though." Rae just looked around her in wonder. El was acting strangely temperamental. Why would she think that Rae never laughed at her?
"Oh of course he was mean. No one would laugh at you." said Rae, her face serious, her words dripping with sarcasm. "And what exactly was the first part?" Rae noticed El had a strange look on her face.
"Oh gods!" El burst out. What? What was wrong? Did Rae miss something? Oh how she hoped she hadn't hurt El's feelings.
"El are you okay? Did I do something wrong?" Rae asked anxiously.

Elyssa had mastered the art of manipulation from a very yound age. At three she could get anything she wanted by looking at you with innocent blue eyes. It was an artform. But rae seemed to take the artform to a new level! She was very irratating indeed!
"Horrid? Me? Never! Irritating....... lets just say I'm skilled in that department."
She shook her head, "No, you are simply horrid. You mean and nasty girl." she glared at her friend and seriously considered attacking her with tapestries. It wouldn't be a good idea, but a girl could dream couldn't she? She instead opted for the safer way and threw another pillow at Rae. It hit her squarly, El's aim was getting better!
"Oh of course he was mean. No one would laugh at you. And what exactly was the first part?" She frowned then realised what she had said before. "No, I meant that you, plural as in people, shouldn't laugh at me. It is so infuriating." she glared at her friend, "And what do you mean 'of course he was mean'?" she was in a bad mood now and it was all Raelle's fault. And Felix's fault. It was all their fault. "The first part meaning the part before he laughed at me. That was fun"
"El are you okay? Did I do something wrong?" She realised that she must have startled Raelle, she gave herself a mental hit in the head and rolled her eyes. "No, I left my purse at the Dove. Stupid. Now I'll never get it back!"

Coincidences. Life was full of them. Felix was perfectly aware of that. He, however, didn't quite believe in coincedences. At least, not recurring ones. Those tended to be very, very evil, like messenger pigeons or obessive compulsive mothers. He knew perfectly well that when coincidences started to get eerie, that there was usually a god orchestrating them. Tricky buggers, gods. Unfortunately, he wasn't quite sure about his own situation.
Of course, that morning he'd woken up with a terrible hangover, and the lady from next door (a friend of his from his brief stint with the players) had fixed him a hangover cure. He'd shaped up, gotten angry because he had been in idiot when talking to a rather pretty intelligent girl, which had ended badly. Very badly. Thing was, he didn't know exactly why, or what he'd said - although he had noticed that Miss Vetinari was temparamental. He'd seen it in actresses before, and wondered why he'd been so careless. Then there was the purse.
Oh yes, the purse. The green and gold affair that taunted him from his desk. Elyssa Vetnari's purse. He knew he had to return it and apologize, because he'd liked her a lot, but he wasn't looking forward to it. It was only part of a long chain of coincidences. It was also raining. How ironic. It was just as bad as the day before. Heavy jacket on, purse in pocket, and hand holding tight to his beloved hat, he braved the torrential rain and the scorn of women, simply because one of them had intruiged him. It was a hard life.
He dismally walked down market way, looking for the sign of Elyssa's shop. He'd gotten the name of a regular card-player at the Dove, who's wife and daughter often went down there. He was dreading it with every step. What was he going to say? No clue. Even a writer's imagination fails you when anxiety is coming out of your ears. He finally saw the sign, and took a deep breath. he could see Elyssa and Raelle (the girl Elyssa had told him about) insiode, having and animated conversation.
It was just another conversation that they were talking about him, and then he stepped in just after Elyssa remembered that she'd forgotten her purse. Damn coincidence. He stood dripping for a moment in the stairway, all too aware of the awkward silence. he dug in her pocket and brought out the amazingly dry purse. "You, um, forgot your purse," he stuttered softly, perfectly aware of he blush spreading across his pale cheeks. This was not a good day.

Rae was worried. El never got angry. This was just scary. Rae hadn't meant to upset El. "No, I left my purse at the Dove. Stupid. Now I'll never get it back!" was El's reply to Rae's previous question.
"Oh my. Well that's a relief! I'm sure someone noticed it and maybe you'll get it back. You can't go around being pessimistic." Rae felt obliged to encourage El. After all, that's what friends are for. As Rae was talking, the door opened and in walked a man. A man that looked partially familiar. Rae was sure she had seen him before.
Realisation hit and Rae felt her cheeks start to burn with heat. It was the man El had been talking to last night! Felix! Rae felt mortified. Not only that, but so shy that she wanted to run out of the shop. She breathed in deeply and backed to the back corner of the shop, so that El and Felix could be together. "You, um, forgot your purse," she heard him say. She saw his cheeks colouring and hid a smile. She turned away from them and busied herself by organising some threads.

Elyssa had a generally sunny disposision. She liked sunshine and orange roses and all. She was a happy person. That was until you made her mad, obviously. She hated being teased and she hated being laughed at. Though, she fogave people quickly. She knew that she was scaring Rae, so she smiled at her slightly. She didn't get angry very often. But when she did it was slightly scary. She tended to scream and throw things and attack people with tapestries.
"Oh my. Well that's a relief! I'm sure someone noticed it and maybe you'll get it back. You can't go around being pessimistic." She rolled her eyes, Rae was way to optimistic for her own good. "No, you don't get thing back from the Dove. The Dove is home to the King of Theives, ergo, no more purse!" she pouted, she had really loved that purse. Life was unfair. She had lost her favourite purse and she had a scared apprentice! She rocked bak on her chair and smiled. "What luck I seem to be having!"
At this particular moment the door of the shop swung open. She glanced sharply at it. Most people came after nine. That is when business hours started. It was unofficial, but it is what generally happened. She wasn't in the mood for customers. A missing purse and the memories of the night before (And the realisation that she was more than a bit temperamental) had changed her whistling mood into a pouting mood. And then she saw who exactly was at the door.
Felix Black stood dripping wet from the rain, in the doorway. She stared at him briefly, wondering why on earth he was there. She opened her mouth to say something and then closed it again. She suddenly seemed incapable of speech. She glanced at Rae who was silently moving to the back of the shop. She glared in her direction and swore to get her back later.
"You, um, forgot your purse," She looked at the green and silver purse in his hand and couldn't help but smile. She had thought that it was gone for ever. She saw his pale cheeks turning red. She bit her and tilted her head to look at him. "Um, thank you. I thought I'd lost it forever." she felt her cheeks grow hot. Oh great, that was awesome. She looked at his dripping wet frame and gestured towards the inside of the shop. "You're wet." she murmered, self conciously tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

Awkward silences were also something Felix was familar with. It may be surprising, but he induced many of them himself. Plainly, he was a terrible socialite and felt no need to takl when it wasn't needed. And when he did talk, it rarely pleased his companions. And viola - awkward silences galore. He'd learned to ignore them by now, to just carry on with whatever he was doing. But this particular silence was really getting to him. And he was wet and cold... and blushing. Gods above. This day couldn't get any worse.
"Um, thank you. I thought I'd lost it forever," Elyssa was saying. "You're welcome," he mumbled, hand in pocket as soon as Elyssa had taken the purse, his other hand still grasping his beloved albiet tattered hat. She was also starting to blush, although right now Felix just wanted to get the hell out of this place. He cast a look at the other girl, Raella, who had suddenly busied herself at his arrival. Great. He'd eat his hat if she wasn't listening. He fell silent, searching for the right words...
"You're wet." That was Miss Vetinari's attempt to fill the all-too-obvious silence, and it brought a smile to his face. "I noticed," he said solemnly, seeming to have regained some semblance of a backbone. Onther furtive glance at the other girl. "I, er, wanted to apologize if I offended you when we were talking..." he trailed off helplessly he really wasn't good at this sort of thing.
He started to back up, somewhat intimidated, but mostly just embarassed. "I better go," he mumbled, reaching the door, all to aware of the blush that stained his cheeks. He fumbled with the door knob, silently cursing when his hat fell from his grip. He sighed. "It was, um, nice seeing you..." He bent down and retrieved the hat, inwardly groaning. How well the day had gone.

With Elyssa silences were never things that seemed to follow her. She was one of those people who couldn't keep silent. She was always chattering about something. Silence was defening, especially those lovely awkward silences. She hated silence, many would argue it was peaceful, that they wanted the quite, but El thought that silence was used when one could think of no words. Silence..... Great, just great. Mental head slap. She hated silence. Especially the awkward kind, the kind that was currently hanging in the air between her and Felix.
She grabbed her purse with a smile. She had thought she had lost it, and it was her favourite purse. She was glad that he had returned it. Nothing you lost at the Dove was returned, but here it was."You're welcome," she tilted her head and smiled warmly, "Really thank you so much." Looking at him she felt sort of bad for the rashness of last night. She was temperamental, she knew that, and she felt bad, looking at Felix. He had, after all, returned her favourite purse.
"I noticed. I, er, wanted to apologize if I offended you when we were talking..."She winced. Ouch, she knew that was coming. she smiled tentatively at him and sighed, "Actually, I sort of wanted to apologise too." She shrugged. If there was one thing El was not good at, that'd be explanations and apologies. "Temperamental, what can I say. And thanks, really, for the purse." she tugged at her braid and tried to think of something better to say than 'thanks'
She glanced at Rae and then back at Felix. Oh, she was in for it now. Rae would tease her for the end of time with this one! "I better go. It was, um, nice seeing you..." She smiled slightly at him and nodded, "Nice seeing you too." she watched as his hat fell to the ground. She stooped to pick it up at about the same time he did, "Oh...." she murmered.

Rae turned slightly, just so that she could see El and Felix's faces. She could hear all that they were saying.... and oh! The awkward silences! How she would tease El. She could see something was hanging in the air. And it wasn't just anything. If Rae wasn't mistaken, El and Felix liked eachother!
What was that? They were apologising to eachother? El, apologise? Wow, thought Rae. El calling herself temperamental? That's a first. This really was so cute to watch. Rae was having a good time, pretending to organise threads while actually watching the two of them.
Rae noticed El glancing back at her and gave her a secretive smile. Yes, El would realise that she would tease her until the end of time. She turned back to her threads but was distracted by the sight of the two both trying to pick up Felix's hat at the same time. Rae wondered if El was blind. Felix obviously liked El, and El obviously liked Felix. It was so adorable! If only they could see it for themselves.

The pinnacle of awkwardness. That was what this was. All of it. Felix didn't know how he was supposed to go about trying to court her, only that he wanted to, which wasn't much help. Quite frankly, Felix was talking more than he had in weeks, and according to him, he couldn't be more obvious if he painted a sign and hit her over the head with it. And he still didn't know what she was thinking. It was awkward and all Felix wanted to do was run away and hope that they'd be cool the next time they met. Pfft. Chivalry. This was what you got for chivalry.
"Actually, I sort of wanted to apologise too. Temperamental, what can I say. And thanks, really, for the purse," Elyssa said tentatively. Felix really wanted to know what excactly had flared her temper, but he wasn't about to ask anytime soon. "'s okay," he said shrugging, ruffling his hair in frustration. The shop was nice and warm and cosy, and the atmosphere would be lovely. Would. It wasn't, at this current moment in time, because Felix and Elyssa were inside together, and it didn't look all that pleasant.
And there was that Raelle girl, listening from the back of the shop. he didn't know if he was glad she was there, or if he hated her for it. Either way, his instincts told him to balk. "Nice seeing you too," she was saying "Oh...." Felix looked up, brushing his messy hair from his eyes. Elyssa straightened up, obviously having reached down. Mithros. This day wasn't getting better. "Um," he began with a tentative smile, "I have to go. See you around, yeah?" Hopefully. But he didn't move just yet. He wanted to hear what she would say.

Since Elyssa Vetinari had been a child, when she had found her magic, she had focused on her studies. She worked super hard to become one of Tortall's elite intellects. Her dream, even at that age, had been to own her own shop. Now, as an apprentice, she was halfway there. The shop was her home, really. Sure she lived in Lilydale Avenue, but home is where the heart is.
She loved the shop, it was warm and cosy and inviting. People came in just to feel that atmosphere. There was a fire on cold days and a vase of fresh flowers on the counter in spring. Brightly coloured materials hung on the walls and beads sat in boxes in neat, orderly rows along one wall. Elyssa had taken pride in making the shop the way it was. But now, in the deadly silence, it didn't seem all that great. She was in a limbo of feelings. Part of her just wanted Felix to shoo, ya know, out of her life, but that was a very small part of her. She didn't know why exactly, but she kind of liked him.
"'s okay," he said in reply to her thanks. She was very thankful, after all, it was her best purse. It had taken her hours to make. She smiled as he ruffled his hair. She felt awkward, which is a feeling probably caused by the fact that she could feel Raelle looking at them behind her. She would et her back for that later. She twisted a loof strand of red hair around her finger and clicked her purse open. As she did the roll of thread that she kept inside fell and rolled in the direction of Rae. Goddess, could this day get any better? Her eyes followed it briefly before she turned backto Felix. Rae surely would pick it up.
"Um. I have to go. See you around, yeah?" She grinned up at him and nodded, she would see him around. She hoped at least. "Definately," she smiled and fiddled with the clasp of her purse. "Well, you know where to find me." she said, shrugging. She practically lived at the shop anyways. She found, oddly, that she did want to see Felix again.

Rae was trying hard not to laugh. The atmosphere was so awkward between those two. She wondered when they would realise their feeling were so obvious, maybe not to them, but Rae could see it as if it was as clear as daylight. "Um, I have to go. See you around, yeah?" Felix was finally leaving. Now Rae could tease Elyssa and get all the interesting facts out of her.
Rae watched them out of the corner of her eye. Why was El playing with her purse? She was embarrassed, was Rae's guess. A reel of thread dropped out of it and rolled in Rae's direction. Rae stooped to pick it up just as El said goodbye to Felix. She walked to El and handed her thread back to her, trying not to make eye contact with Felix, but at the same time trying to see if his looks would fit El's.
"Here's your thread, El." was all Rae said. She felt her cheeks burning again. Damn this blush! she thought angrily. She turned and walked away, back to the reels she was organising.
