Your Character
[Full Name:] Sorrel Malmsey
[Age:] 17
[Gender:] Male
[Date of Birth:] 9 September
[Place of Birth:] A little town south of Port Legann
[Residence:] Corus… in a gutter.
[Class:] Commoner
[Title/rank:] Master.
[Alignment:] Strongly Friends With Benefits. Whoever will give him the most pay.
[Occupation:] Rogue Spy
[Appearance:] Slight malnutrition as a child leaves his face a little gaunt, which he doesn’t like because it makes him look ‘odd’ and ‘odd looking people don’t get information’. His mop of black hair gets cut occasionally, and falls over dark brown, nearly black eyes, and caramel coloured skin. He stands at about 5’9” and is extremely skinny, something he can’t seem to get rid of, no matter how much he eats.
[Attire:] Sorrel’s motto in life is ‘if someone else gives it to you, it’s pure gold’. Anything he wears he’s either nicked off someone else or found in the street, or been given to him.
Usually, he dresses in a pair of clunky boots, a light cotton shirt under a heavy coat, depending on the weather, and a pair of tan tights. Anything with colour is far too expensive.
[Personality:] Above all, Sorrel is a sneaky little bugger. He’ll stop only at violence to get the information he needs. Whether it be mind games, deceit, flirtation… Sorrel can do it. Obviously he's very intelligent, even though he didn't get much in the way of education. Living on the streets for 3 years hasn't hardened his heart, but it has made him extremely cunning, witty, and sharp. If fighting were about tactics and brainpower rather than strength and force, Sorrel would win every time.
He’s a real ladies man, despite his occupation. Sorrel can have them coming from all over the place, and this aids him in his job. A few drinks and they’ll tell you anything, he always says.
Usually very calm, his temper only flares up when he is taunted about his age, or heritage. Not that he lets anyone know much about himself…
[Beliefs – personal and political:] Isn’t that into Gods, but isn’t that adverse to the quick prayer before he gets beaten up by a few bag men. Politically, it’s much the same as anything else – who’s richer?
[Fears:] Bag Men, The Rogue himself, the Lord Provost, strong people…
[Likes:] Ladies, alcohol, real houses
[Dislikes] See ‘fears’
[Quirks:] Tends to twitch when he sits still for too long, extremely intelligent.
[Weapons:] none.
[Inventory:]
[Strengths:] Not physically strong (at all), though, as mentioned above, is extremely intelligent. This works in his favour as he doesn't look like the intelligent type.
[Weaknesses:] every kind of physical weakness possible; weak, strength wise, couldn't ride a horse to save his life, useless with a bow and arrow, useless with a sword... dagger skills are less than adequate.
[Magic:] The Sight.
[Goal:] to stay alive
[Family:] Mother Kella, father Ronan, sister Elspeth, sister Natalia.
[Lover:]
[Familiar/Pet:]
[History:] 20 year old Kella Rosoffe came to Tortall, seeking a new life. Her parents were dead, although it was something she had been expecting for a while. After her mothers death with fever, her father had never been the same. She felt heartless thinking it, but she had expected him to die soon after.
Her Raka appearances granted her safe and relatively cheap passage on a Raka trading boat if she was prepared for a few months of heavy sea passage. The boat would go south and around the Isles, then head up the coast of Tortall, passing the Yamani Islands before heading back down the coast again.
It was on this boat she met Ronan, perhaps one of the only Luarins on board. It was he who was assignment to look after her on the journey, and with time she learned that he was not white Copper Islander, as she had assumed, but a Tortallan working up som coin before returning home, where he still wasn’t sure what to do with his life. Ronan persuaded kella to get off the boat at Port Legann, to come and live with him. In a few weeks she was with child, and that settled the matter.
And so, in a few months, along came Sorrel, the baby that the parents weren’t really sure what to do about. Despite first misconceptions (like feeding him beef at a month old), Kella and Ronan really loved their sun, and cared for him as best they could.
A sister, Elspeth, came along when Sorrel was about five. This was around the time his parents began to notice he showed symptoms of the Sight, an ability Ronan could vaguely remember being possessed by his father. When another (slightly unexpected) sister came along when he was about 14, his parents began to struggle.
It was then Sorrel decided to move to Corus. So, in the dead of night, with only a note to explain himself, he packed his meagre possessions and left.
It was hard, at first, living on the streets. Gradually the boy became accustomed to the area, knowing where he could get a free meal, which wealthier houses left their back door unlocked at night, things like that. Sorrel became a squatter of sorts, moving houses when he felt the authorities were into him again.
Becoming involved with the Rogue was a long and delicate process. He was first discovered when, ironically, he tried to pick the pocket of of one of their leading members, a man everyone called Salamander. Sorrel narrowly avoided getting beaten to death that night, by quick talking and sheer willpower.
As he was seen around the city getting out of tight spots and gathering information, he was noticed by Rogues more and more. By the age of 16, he was referred to as their ‘little talent’, a youth you could go to, wanting information, and he could have it to you a week after at the latest.
