"And I am a friend of hers, milady," he told Rose. "Congratulations, it's about time this kingdom had a Champion worthy of the title." Riana turned around to look at Damien. He had startled her slightly when he unexpectedly appeared behind where she was standing. Well, she thought to herself, you wanted him in here so you wouldn't feel uncomfortable. Looks like you got your wish...
"I thank you, sir Merchant. Please, tell me your name."
A grin crossed Riana's face as she tried not to laugh. Damien was playing the part of a merchant today, and apparently people were buying it. He must just love the thrill of it, she thought. Resisting the urge to shake her head, she wondered what it must be like to be a Rogue, and be able to fool people with unnatural ease. It was a dangerous life, to be sure, but the thought of such a thrilling life intrigued her, and it also made her worry about Damien and the trouble he might be getting in to.
"My name is Alexander, milady." Again, Riana had to control the urge to laugh, and she almost couldn't do it. As Rose commented that she hoped to be able to speak to Damien again later in the evening, Riana raised her eyebrow skeptically.

"You're lucky you're out of my reach young knight. I am of noble birth, you can't treat me like that."
"Yeah, my father, my mother, my siblings, and my Knight Mistress. It seems I couldn't escape it if I tried!"
Jasmin grinned, rolling her eyes, and replied in the very same mock-haughty tone as her friend, "Why, Lady Roseanna, you forget yourself. I too, am of noble birth. And trust me, that doesn't mean a thing in situations that really matter." Her eyes sparkled with delight at the conversation. Things were turning out wonderfully, and the talk was truly amusing. "It doesn't matter if I'm out of your reach, for example. This Lady Knight fights back." And she winked in return, still smiling. Jasminai looked at the squire solemnly, tempted to laugh. But no, this wa stoo much fun. "You don't need your family's influence, Rhianna," she stated, her tone still serious, "Rose's influence is more than overflowing."
"Jazz, Fhire, Rhianna, Luc, Alexander, Riana, my lord Knight Commander; if you will please excuse me for a moment, I do believe I'm wanted up front."
"Luck, Rosie. You won't need it, though."

"Luckily for all those budding warrioresses, I've relinquished my dreams of loving the Lady Rose, a great pity to her I'm sure. Seems you'll have to put up with me instead."
Rhianna grinned. "I'll be glad to put up with someone with a wit like yours. It's been a while since I've talked properly with anyone of the male persuasion." She winked at her fellow knights, knowing that it didn't seem that many boys were squires or pages currently, compared with the numbers of girls.
"You don't need your family's influence, Rhianna, Rose's influence is more than overflowing."
Rhianna's own expression mimicked the solemnity of Jazz's. "Of course not, Jazz. Who'd need family when you can have Rose?" A wicked grin flitted across her mouth, her green eyes sparkling with mirth.

"And who would I have the pleasure of speaking to tonight?"
Sapphire smiled and bit her lip, eyes dancing. "Luc it is. And Sapphire will do just fine. But I'm known as Fhire to my fans!" She said tilting her head. So the uncomfortable one was called 'Luc.' She looked less uncomfortable now. She shot him a winning smile. Why was he uncomfortable? She let her eyes rove and spotted Damein walking into the hall. She smiled slightly and turned her attension back to their ever growing group.
"I'm Riana Pereira, milady," she told the knight. "And just so that you know, I'm by no means a proper lady. I'm a Queen's Rider Trainee."
She smiled at the newcomer. "I'm Sapphire and Queen's Riders are probably more important than mere ladies anyhow." she said to Riana. Queen's Riders were always interesting. They always had very interesting stories on their training and the like. She grinned at her.
"What, you've decided Fhire's having too much fun to ask her?"
She whirled and grinned at Jazz. "I am not just having fun. I am working and becoming ready and prepared for a long journey on a boat with a cabin that is to small and a crew that is to big!" her eyes sparkled mischeiviously, "And I am also delegating and preparing my speech thank you very much!"
"My name is Alexander, milady,"
She raised her eyebrows as Damein arrived. Alexander hey? Interesting choice of name for the rogue. She gave him a special smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you Alexander."
"Jazz, Fhire, Rhianna, Luc, Alexander, Riana, my lord Knight Commander; if you will please excuse me for a moment, I do believe I'm wanted up front."
"Luck, luck Rosie. Have fun!"

Rose raised an eyebrow, amethyst eyes sparkling.
"Aye, it is a great pity." she said with mock sadness.
Why, Lady Roseanna, you forget yourself. I too, am of noble birth. And trust me, that doesn't mean a thing in situations that really matter. It doesn't matter if I'm out of your reach, for example. This Lady Knight fights back."
"Pfft. Sure. I could get you with one hand tied behind my back." she said with a wink.
"Luck, Rosie. You won't need it, though."
"Thanks Jazzy. I probably won't, but better to be safe than sorry." she said.

"Luc it is. And Sapphire will do just fine. But I'm known as Fhire to my fans!"
"And who could help but be a fan, my lady?" he murmured. Luc had seen the young men at events such as this court young women with fanciful words and contrived compliments- and he'd been disgusted with the women that sucked it up. No, Luc wouldn't waste his time on mincing words and flattery. A sentence such as that was as good as it got, with him.
"I'll be glad to put up with someone with a wit like yours. It's been a while since I've talked properly with anyone of the male persuasion."
He had to admit he enjoyed it too. Nice to speak to a girl who won't fall over your feet, or worse, try to reform you. He shivered a little at the memory, hoping his companions would put it down to cold. It was night after all. Unfortunately it was also nearing the summer solstice.
If only more girls wanted to talk, then, he wouldn't mind their company, Luc thought. But they wanted to buy dresses, and take him to their mother...he managed to refrain from shuddering, but only just. You need more control.
"Ever so flattered. I'll be sure to live up to your expectations, then," he said, in a matter-of-fact tone. "As terribly hard it will be, I do love a challenge. He smiled, fully then, a wolfish, roguish grin that looked out of place with the well-dressed young man in the fine clothes.
He scanned the dancefloor. It was a medium-paced song, not too slow nor too fast. He could feel the rhythm of the music, as if his heart was beating in synch. But nobody was dancing yet, and he thought girls could be quite particular about these things. He looked wistfully at the empty space in the ballroom.

"Your Majesties, I do believe that I was being signaled by a hearld that you wanted me. Is there of some way that I can be of service?"
Queen Shinkokami I smiled, and what a smile. When she'd first arrived in Tortall she'd hidden her expressions, just like any other Yamani, but she'd opened up since then. She back was straight, her clothing and hair immaculate, the very image of a queen. She nodded regally at Rose. "Yes, Roseanna, there is, in fact." Shinko turned to her otherside, apparently looking for someone, and then her face fell. "Well, I was going to introduce you to the Copper Islands Ambassador as you will be travelling there, but he wasn't where I last saw him."
"I am not just having fun. I am working and becoming ready and prepared for a long journey on a boat with a cabin that is to small and a crew that is to big! And I am also delegating and preparing my speech thank you very much!"
"Ah. So all this chatter, and finery and things is just a front? You are actually working really hard while laughing anf talking? How strange. I am merely having fun. I am not doing all those things you mentioned, because I am at a ball. It really is amazing that you can do all of that at once." She grinned and winked, then stepped out of Sapphire's reach. She did not wish to have a headache just as the ball was starting. Fans cracked over the head could do that.
"Pfft. Sure. I could get you with one hand tied behind my back."
"Roseanna, think here. I was you squire. You taught me. I know all you secrets, as well as my own. Do you honestly think you'll win?" She smiled, tugging on a curl that had fallen in fornt of her eyes. She loved playful banter like this, fun quips thrown back and forth. Only with her friends, though. Some people's perception of wit could be quite dreary.

"Roseanna, think here. I was you squire. You taught me. I know all you secrets, as well as my own. Do you honestly think you'll win?"
Rose's eyes twinkled happily.
"Jasminai," she began-hey, they were going by formal names here, "I know that you were my squire dearheart. And of course I taught you, and I learned all of your secrets as well. I'm pretty sure we'd be at a stalemate by the end of the round." she said matter-of-factly. __________________________________________________

Rose nodded solemnly. It'd be a great idea to form a relationship with the ambassador from the Copper Isles, he'd probably be a great help in sticky situations. She'd glimpsed him before as a squire when serving during the Midwinter Festivities...maybe she could find him now. She scanned the crowd to look for the man. She finally spotted him, the man with dark black hair and golden brown skin.
"Excuse me, Your Majesty, but is that him over there?" she said, pointing discretly in his direction.

Kirra entered a few steps behind Damien. Kirra was nervous, as she had never really come to a function with mostly nobles. Biting her lip and swallowing, in reality trying to swallow her nervousness, she stepped into the room, searching for where Rose was, and where Riana and Damien were.
Spotting Rose soon, with Riana and Damien, Kirra started to walk over there. However, Kirra had come slightly too late, as Rose was already walking over to the Queen and King. Reaching the group, not recognizing anyone she knew really except for Riana, Kirra swallowed once more and quipped, "Well, I guess I'm a bit too late to offer my congratulations to the Lady Rose. Ah, well. I shall do it when she is done."
Kirra grinned and smiled at her friend, before shrinking back a bit and sealing her mouth and looking down at her attire. Kirra was wearing the best she had, which wasn't much compared to what many of the nobles were wearing. It was a pale green dress with a simple design.

Rhianna grinned at Luc. "And I'll be glad to see you meet that challenge. I have no doubt you will." Her emerald eyes followed his longing gaze out onto the mostly empty dance floor, and a sly smile stole across her lips. " DO you dance, Luc?"

"And who could help but be a fan, my lady?"
She narrowed her eyes. Ah. So he was one of those people who thought most girls fell over their feet at any sign of male intellegance and whose only worry was dresses. Hmph. That annoyed her. She shook her head, "Well, I wasn't expecting such a compliment. And actually many could help it. It's whether they wanted to or not." She smiled at him and turned to Jazz.
"Ah. So all this chatter, and finery and things is just a front? You are actually working really hard while laughing anf talking? How strange. I am merely having fun. I am not doing all those things you mentioned, because I am at a ball. It really is amazing that you can do all of that at once."
"Hey, now that is mean and hurtful my dear. And you know how hard preparing for this thing has been. I have had no sleep. Non. Zero amounts of sleep! So lay off missy." She took her fan out of her bag and whacked at Jazz. She had alot of things on her mind. Delegating this trip was very difficult. She didn't have time to even think about dresses and the like. And so kill her if she liked to look pretty. It wasn't a crime! Hmph.
She grinned at Jazz and Rose.

"Well, I guess I'm a bit too late to offer my congratulations to the Lady Rose. Ah, well. I shall do it when she is done."
Riana turned and looked at her friend with a grateful smile on her face. Standing with Damien amongst strangers was a little unnerving, and having a friend there was nice. She noticed her friend's dress was a pale green, like her own, except Riana's dress was slightly darker than Kirra's, and, of course, the design was much different. The thought of them dressing alike made her have to stifle a laugh, for she'd never had to worry about dressing along the same lines as someone else.
Glancing over at Damien, she saw he was content, and he looked as if he wasn't planning on leaving any time soon. He seemed to be enjoying being disguised as having people not know his true identity. Alexander, she thought, remembering the name he gave to Rose. Surely it must be an alias of some sort...or else it's something that he used to go by. Thinking up a random name on the spot wasn't a good idea. He might forget it later on, and find himself in a mess of trouble. So the name 'Alexander' must have some sort of meaning to him.
"Alexander," she said, turning to look at him. Calling Damien by that name felt odd, but she shook the feeling away. Her blue eyes made a quick sweep of the dance floor and then returned to him. "I'm very surprised at you not dancing. Is there any reason why you're not gallivanting about on the floor with every eligible young maiden?" Her eyes glimmered with playfullness, a slightly unusual thing, coming from her.

Damien grinned as Kirra entered. It was good that Riana had a friend; he sometimes worried about her because of her shyness, but it was apparent that she was breaking free of her shell and meeting new people. He silently reminisced about the day he had met Riana. It was at the Midwinter Festival, and then she had been almost scared of him. Now, that had all changed. The shyness was still there a little, but it nowhere near as prominent as before.
He smiled as Rose went to speak with the their Highnesses. He wondered if one day he would speak to them himself, and his eyes glittered at the thought of meeting them when he was in disguise. His eyes wandered the room and he spotted Lord Provost talking amongst some of the conservatives. That made his smile widen, and he had to stifle a laugh.
"Alexander, I'm very surprised at you not dancing. Is there any reason why you're not gallivanting about on the floor with every eligible young maiden?"
Damien turned to Riana and raised his eyebrow at her. "My lady, I was not aware that you were attuned to such things." His eyes lowered as he pondered her newfound courage. "Are you offering a dance, or asking for one?" He held out his hand to her, wondering if she would have enough bravery to take him up on the offer. "Either way, I will glady accompany you on the floor."

He held out his hand to her, wondering if she would have enough bravery to take him up on the offer. "Either way, I will gladly accompany you on the floor."
Riana stepped back slightly, somewhat taken aback by what he'd said. She still wasn't quite used to his straightforwardness and it always caught her off guard when he said anything. She looked up into his eyes and gave her most confident smile. "Damien, I would be happy to . . . " Her voice trailed off.
Her eyes averted to the dance floor, still staring at its emptiness. It wasn't in her nature to necessarily be the first one on a dance floor, but her mother had once told her that there would be many changes in her life, and that change was good for a person. Riana told herself that this change was no different. She reached out and took Damien's outstretched hand.
