When Beka Cooper was assigned duty under the notable Matthias Tunstall and Clara Goodwin, she had no idea what was in store for her. Sure, she knew that her road to becoming a dog would never be easy, when had anything ever been? But shy Beka wasn’t prepared for the good deeds she was about to perform.
First, it was sniffing out the Rat-worthy Crookshank, who was murdering diggers just to get his hands on pink rocks; fire opals. How did she know they those gone missing were murdered? The pigeons and they wouldn’t be denied their revenge, their justice. It was hunting, tracking and finally fetching.
Crookshank wasn’t the only big time Rat, no… A story book legend had come to life to haunt the streets of the Lower City. The Shadow Snake was taking away the loved ones of people who had risen above their station, people who had acquired something valuable. Little did the Snake know it had a Terrier on the case. With the murder of her friend, Tansy’s son and the kidnapping of Tansy’s husband, Beka’s nose was to the ground. The Snake never had a chance.
Now, with everything seemingly quiet in the Lower City, a new Rat has found its way into Beka’s backyard. This Rat not only has a cold and villainous heart, but it has the support a wealthy noble and with new arrivals into Corus, the city is abuzz.
The Rat: another myth and another legend. The Nightrider. No one knows who the Nightrider is, but one this is for sure: they used to be Tortall’s Robin Hood; stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Now, the Nightrider is stealing from the poor and not just valuables, but children, women and young men and all of them have some form of the Gift. One thing is for certain: they don’t turn up dead, so where do these people go? Why does the Nightrider want them? What is the purpose?
Corus has to find out and soon, before the Nightrider turns his eyes on the Tortallan heir and leaves the city defenseless of mages. [/align]

{Many canons open. Not necessary to have knowledge of Tamora Pierce’s novels (I’ll let you know what you need to know). Set after “Terrier”}
