In the world of Tortall there are many different professions to be, and here is a list of some of them. If you can think of another you want, PM either me or Jazz and ask. We will say if it is suitable.
Italics are direct quites from the books or glossary.
Knight
A warrior of Tortall, skilled in weaponry, and upholder of the Code of Chivalry. A knight is a protector of the country, of the people, and sworn to always answer a call for help.
Only nobles can become knights.
Rogue
The Court of the Rogue consists of those who "live by their wits". They stay on the other side of the law, and are rules by the Master of the Court of the Rogue, the King of Thieves, or, simply, the Rogue. Oh, how the Provost would love to get his hands on him...
Mainly commoners, these lawless people consist of: assasins, hitmen, theives, pickpockets, conmen, mages, fences, spies and many more...
Mage
Gift, the: human, academic magic, the use of which must be taught.
Mage: a wizard, male or female.
They have use of the Gift, magic they were born with. It can be used to good, or evil. The mage is a versatile class, since it has many sub-classes. A Gift can be centered towards a specific class (such as Healing), but in many cases it is a general magic that can be steered towards anything. Below are a few examples.
- Battlemage. A battlemage is a person whose Gift has been trained for war. Destruction and killing is what they do best.
- Contrarily, a Healer is a person who has been trained to use their magic for the good of the people. Specially trained in the medical field, they use their magic as well as herbs and potions to help the sick and injured.
Wildmage
Wildmage: mage who deals in wild magic, the kind of magic that is part of nature.
Wild magic: magic that is part of the natural world. Unlike the human Gift, it cannot be drained or done away with; it is always present.
Not strictly a mage, since they don't have the gift, a wildmage is a person with a link to animals. Through this bond they can communicate with animals, and form friendships with them. They can also transform into animals and heal animals.
Full wildmages are rare. You cannot have the Gift and Wildmagic. PM with a very good reason to have both.
Queen's Rider
Founded by Queen Thayet I, the Riders -or Irregulars -are a calvary/police group that protects Tortallans who live in hard-to-reach parts of the country.
They enforce the law and teach local residents to defend themselves. The basic unit is a Rider Group, with eight to nine members. Rank in a Group is simply that of commander and second-in-command; the head of the Riders is the Commander. They accept both women and men in their ranks, unlike the army, the navy and the King's Own. Their headquarters lies between the palace and the Royal Forest.
Both nobles and commoners can join. You must be fifteen or older to join. You must be in good health - no missing limbs. You must be single, you need good relexes and to be able to read and write. Being able to ride is not required, but it's an added plus.
Kings Own
A calvary/police group answering to the king, whose members serve as royal bodyguards and as protective troops throughout the realm.
They answer to the Knight Commander. The ranks are filled by younger sons of noble houses, Bazhir, and the sons of wealthy merchants. The Own is made of three companies of one hundred fighters each, in addition to the servingmen, who care for supplies and remounts.
First Company, a show company, traditionally provides palace bodyguards and security for the monarchs. Under Lord Raoul, Second and Third Company are added and dedicated to active service away from the palace, helping to guard the realm.
Shang
Shang fighters are extremely skilled in the fighting arts; nobody over the age of seven is allowed to train to become Shang. They are skilled wit all weapons, though are best at hand-to-hand comabt. Once fully trained, a Shang will take up a title. The very best take titles of immortals. However, Shang will not take anybody with any form of magic.
After they take their titles, they wonder the world, often teaching. A Shang rarely stays in the same place for long.
